Site of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, which was built in 1949 and still in operation today, Twentynine Palms is home to a population of 25,798 residents. Twentynine Palms is also the location of the famed attraction the Oasis of Mara, were pools of water surface from beneath the desert floor, giving rise to many palm trees. The site is visited by over 140,000 people per year. Named by Colonel Henry Washington in 1852, Twentynine Palms is still inhabited by the Missions Band of Indians who have a reservation there.
