The 17th largest city in Los Angeles County, South Gate is 7.4 square miles and is considered a Gateway City, 7 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Home to a population of over 94,390 residents, South Gate was incorporated in 1923, on January 20th. Known as the “Azalea City,” it adopted its city flower as its symbol in 1965. In 1990 it won an All American City Award from the National Civic League along with ten other U.S. communities. The area was inhabited by the Tongva Indians before the Spanish ranchers came to the location.
