Found in the North County area of San Diego County, San Marcos, is the residence of over 83,780 people. The city is also home to the Cal State college of San Marcos, attracting thousands of students every year with its well known Art, Computer Science, and Marine biology programs. San Marcos began expanding rapidly during the 1950s and onward. The city used to receive its water from the Colorado River, making the area a more than suitable location for homesteaders and the population began to grow.
Incorporated in 1963, San Marcos was considered to be the third-fastest expanding city in California at the time. During that era it was home to 17,479 residents, but had increased to over 82,000 by the year 2000. In recent years the high tech sector of its economy has grown drastically thanks to is Cal State campus.
