Though is was part of unincorporated San Diego County for many years, Poway became an official city during December of 1980. The city is known for its scenic beauty, a more rural area compared to many of its neighbors. It is known by locals as “The City in the Country”. Though not a very large city, Poway is the residence of over 47,800 people.
The settlement of Poway began as missionaries came and began raising cattle in the area. The area also attracted many American settlers coming to farm and build homes in the area during the antebellum period. The city got its start as a result of agriculture, though many credit its history to cowboys.
