With a population of 4,844 residents, the city is part of the Mojave Desert region, encompassing the Nevada, Arizona, and California borders. Needles is found just off of the Interstate 40. Needles gets its name from a pointed group of stones found along the bank of the Colorado river on the Arizona side.
The Mojave National Preserve can be accessed from Needles because of its location. The are is known for its intemperate climate, given its proximity to Death Valley, and experiences extreme heat in the summer, often reaching up to 120 degrees. It is a record setting city for the hottest days during summer in the country, and also in the world on occasion.
