The population of the area is at 103,466 as of the 2010 census.
The area of Murrieta was discovered in 1882 after the construction of the railway depot which connected it to the transcontinental route of the Southern California Railroad. The area began a campagne for city status is 1990 which led to its establishment as the city of Murrieta in 1991. Murrieta is known as the safest city in the Riverside County area, and of those with a population over 100,000, the second safest in the United States.
