With a population of 51,821 residents, Lake Elsinore is a thriving city home to the widely known natural freshwater lake of the same name. The lake itself is now about 3,000 acres in size and was a popular stop for mexican rancheros to water their animals and set up camp as they traveled along what was known as the Southern Immigrant Trail, on the south shore of the lake. The city was long home to the Luiseno tribe of Native Americans, they were its earliest known inhabitants. Commonly found in the area are early artifacts and pictographs on rocks.
