Indio was born as a needful halfway point between the Los Angeles and Yuma, Arizona points that lay along the Southern Pacific railroad. The city gets its name from a variation of the word “Indian” in Spanish. Indio was formerly known by “Indian Wells” like its neighboring city, but was later changed to Indio. The city began expanding after the construction of the railroad in 1876. Though at the time the area was rather inhospitable, Southern Pacific strove to make their worker's lives more comfortable in an effort to attract more people to the area.
Today Indio is home to many diverse events and the city's job market is at an all time high in sectors like maintenance, hospitality, agriculture, and construction.
