Hemet was a thriving community even before the formation of Riverside County itself. The city was responsible for a booming agriculture industry which created much business in the area. W.F. Whittier and E.L. Mayberry were responsible for the founding of the Hemet Land Company and the Lake Hemet Water Company, taking place during the first land boom in Southern California. The city, formerly known named Rancho San Jacinto, was first known for its cattle ranching land.
Hemet is the famed home of the Ramona Pageant, California's first outdoor play, one of the longest running outdoor plays in the United States.
