With a population of 111,772 as recorded by the 2010 census, Downey is a city found in southeast Los Angeles County. The city is known most notably for being the birthplace of the famous Apollo space program. During World War II the Vultee Aircraft company was the largest employer in Downey, leading the city into the prosperity it enjoys today. Downey is also home to one of the most widely known rehabilitation centers open to the public, the Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. The center is known worldwide for its contributions to spinal cord injury care and post-polio syndrome.
