Named by Colonel Henry Washington the city was known for its cathedral-like rock formations. Today locals refer to it as “Cat City” for short.

Cathedral city is located immediately east of the San Jacinto Mountains in the foothills, it's found along the Interstate 10 with an elevation of 328 feet. Incorporated in 1981, the city began subdivision of housing in 1925.
