The city was named after Washington Irving's novel “Tales of Alhambra” which was very popular during the time of its founding. The motto of the city is “Gateway to the San Gabriel Valley,” and it has a population of over 83,080 residents as of the 2010 census. Incorporated in 1903, on July 11th, Alhambra is found 80 miles outside the downtown Los Angeles Civic center.
